There are a lot of fantastic zoos out there, and every zoo offers a different experience for visitors. However, the San Diego Zoo presents the most unique zoo experience. Located in Balboa Park (an already huge tourist attraction), the zoo is surrounded by many culturally educational museums and delicious restaurants. The zoo is a member of one of the biggest zoological associations in the whole world, so that is impressive on its own.
This zoo features an extraordinary variety of lush forest trails leading to their different exhibits. Themed walkways aren’t exclusive to the San Diego Zoo though, but this zoo does have many distinctive features. Here are four reasons why the San Diego Zoo is the best zoo in the world:
World Class Exhibits
This zoo had an extremely innovative approach to their exhibits. When the zoo was still very young, they wanted to create more naturalistic habitats for the animals and overall more authentic environments for the happiness of the animals. This would also enhance the experience for visitors. In order to accomplish this, the San Diego Zoo worked hard to become a pioneer in in cage-less animal environments and naturalistic animal habitats.
This zoo lies within the very lovely Balboa Park, with is packed with fun family activities. Right outside the zoo is the Balboa Park Miniature Train, a cute little ride operated by the zoo. Although the zoo is large and fun, not all patrons want to spend their entire day walking. This is totally understandable, and fortunately this park has many amenities for those who need a minute to sit back and relax.
Balboa park is home to many lush gardens and mouthwatering restaurants. Their calming lily pond and fresh open spaces are a nice break from the inevitable animal noises that come with visiting a zoo.
The San Diego Zoo was formed from abandoned exotic animal exhibits following the Panama-California Exposition in 1915. The zoo’s current location was plotted out in 1921 For the most of Belle Benchley’s time as appointed zoo director (1925 until 1953), she was the only female zoo director in the world – showing that this zoo was already distinguishing themselves from other leading zoos early on.
Amazing Variety of Animals
The variety of animals you will encounter while visiting this zoo is breathtaking. The monkey trails give you a glimpse into the exciting life of the primates, and the different aviary trails allow you to see well over 200 tropical birds. The San Diego Zoo is also famous for its panda exhibit. Since 2011, this zoo has been one of only four in the country to have giant pandas on display (they are also the most successful American zoo in breeding the pandas). The snow leopards and other leopards are also beautiful animals to observe. Any person young or old will appreciate venturing from exhibit to exhibit, form the giraffes and cheetahs to the arctic polar bears and foxes.
For a truly remarkable San Diego experience, make sure you go to the Zoo for at least one day and if you live in San Diego, get a yearly pass.
